Old Rishworthians XV 43 - 6 Huddersfield YMCA XV Rishworthians youngsters shine again
Match Preview Saturday 5th April
Rishworthians take a break from league action before the last two games of their season. Instead a Rishworthian XV made up of a mix of players from the first and second teams will entertain Huddersfield YMCA seconds. It will be used as a training match and give coach Jamie Bloem a chance to look at some of the second team players in action and enable them to stake a claim for positions in the remaining league games, away to Sheffield Oaks and Wetherby.

Match Report
Rishworthians have the best defence of any club in England – and that’s official. Figures released by the Rugby Football Union show that the club tops the defensive record list of the 19 clubs throughout England – including Old Brodleians – which have 100 per cent returns in league matches. Having scored 781 points in 20 league games and only conceding 56, Rishworthians average for concession of points per game is 2.8, almost two better than their nearest rivals. Last week’s 23 – 0 win over Ossett was also their 10th clean sheet.
They proved how mean their defence can be against a strong Huddersfield YMCA second string, especially as coach Jamie Bloem used it as a training game for the final two league games of the season over the next couple of weeks. Already promoted from Yorkshire Five, the club started with a side including six second team players and Bloem brought on a further five in the second half. Though they tried hard, particularly in the second half, the visitors were unable to break through the Rishworthian defensive wall. All they could muster was two penalties, early in the first half. Skipper Gary Morris and centre Fraser Davidson were outstanding as the home side ran in seven tries.
Davidson started the ball rolling in the first five minutes with a great break. His pass put fullback Joe Billing in at the corner. YM hit back with two long range penalties before No 8 Chris Fox emerged with the ball from a maul and put teenage flanker Gerrard Rollings over under the posts. Billing added the conversion. Right wing Lee Atkinson completed a fine run to go round his man to score. Billing converted. On the other wing Anthony Shoesmith took a good long pass from stand-off Jack Butcher to touch down wide out. Billing again converted.

Half Time Rishworthians 26 - 6 Huddersfield YMCA

Play was disrupted somewhat in the second half with the many changes, but Butcher was able to finish off a try he had started by linking with Fox and Morris. Davidson got the try he deserved after Morris had picked up a loose ball in his own half and burst through, linking with Fox before the final pass. Butcher added the conversion. Coach Bloem brought himself on for the last 10 minutes and broke away with the ball in his own half and ran through to touch down and complete the scoring.
