St Edwards OB 0 - 47 Old Rishworthians Rishworthians progress to 4th round of Vase for 1st time
Match Preview
It is unchartered territory for Rishworthians as the travel to Liverpool in the third round of the Edf Junior Vase. But the club is determined to bounce back after last week's league defeat by local rivals Vandals. Rishworthians learned a few lessons after being soundly beaten for the first time in more than a year and will be aiming to progress to the fourth round for the first time in their history. They meet St Edward's Old Boys, who are bottom of South Lancs/Cheshire Three having won only one of their five league games this season.

While young winger Anthony Shoesmith joins the club's worrying injury list, they are boosted by the return of player-coach Jamie Bloem, for his first appearance of the season after recovering from injury, which allows Aaron Canning to revert to his preferred position at fullback. Chris Flanagan comes back to add experience to the centre, with Fraser Davidson still unfit. Prop Martin Brook, who had to go off with a neck injury last week, is also unavailable, so David Morris comes in at hooker, with Simon Edmundson moving to prop.

Match report Saturday 18th October Junior Vase 3rd Round

Rishworthiians cruised into the fourth round of the EDF Junior Vase for the first time in their history with a seven-try demolition of their Liverpool hosts.

Straight from the kick-off they were on the attack, bouncing back strongly from last week's league defeat by local rivals Vandals. Although they had three players missing, they welcomed back player-coach Jamie Bloem for the first time this season after injury. He made his presence felt immediately with a fine tactical kick which almost saw left wing Nick Faulkner in at the corner. From the resulting scrum, flanker Tom Clough, playing at No 8 for the absent James Clarke, jinked his way over. Bloem kicked the first of six conversions.

The score was doubled soon afterwards. Flanker Gerard Rollings harassed the home defence, dribbled through and kicked ahead for right wing Joe Billing to race through to touch down. Bloem added the conversion. Not content with kicking, Bloem was on hand minutes later to charge down a clearance kick and pick up to score under the posts, Bloem converting his own try. Just before the break Rishworthians put in a flowing move which saw Faulkner almost in at the corner, but he was able to slip the ball inside for lock Chris Fox to touch down in the corner. Bloem converted to make it 28 - 0 at half-time.

Half time St Edwards OB 0 - 28 Rishworthians

Soon after the restart the visitors scored again, Billing taking a long pass from Bloem to touch down in the corner. There was no shortage of commitment from the home side and they came back strongly putting Rishworthians under pressure for almost the only time in the match and it needed solid defence to keep them out. The visitors held out and then it was all Bloem.

First Bloem scythed through the home defence to score under the posts and then Bloem charged down a clearance kick in a copy of his first half try, before picking up to score. Bloem converted both his tries, before coming off. Rishworthians finished the game strongly, but were unable to add to their score.
